Scarlet Tiger Moths

Recently we’ve been seeing dozens of these around the garden.

They are very striking with their red bodies and spotted wings.

A swift Google led me to an identification site where I discovered they are scarlet garden tiger moths.

Apparently the caterpillars love to feed on comfrey which explains the proliferation are we have masses of it all over the garden.

Oddly this is the first year we have ever noticed them.

Either we are both magnificently unobservant or they are new comers.
